About Low German
Low German (Plattdeutsch) is spoken across northern Germany and in the north-eastern Netherlands. A survey estimated that about 2.5 million people in Germany speak it well, most of them older. It is protected as a regional language under the European Charter and was once the trading language of the Hanseatic League.
