Sardinian is spoken on the island of Sardinia in Italy and has two main varieties, Logudorese and Campidanese. Estimates put the number of speakers at around one million, though fewer young people use it, and UNESCO classes it as definitely endangered. It is recognised as a minority language under Italian law and is often described as the Romance language closest to Latin in its sounds.
