About Yiddish
Yiddish is the historical language of Ashkenazi Jews, a Germanic language written in the Hebrew alphabet. Before the Second World War it had about 11 million speakers; today estimates range from several hundred thousand to around a million, many of them in Haredi communities in the US, Israel and Europe. It is a recognised minority language in several European countries, including Sweden and the Netherlands.
